Yesterday we went out to Matsumoto and did hashira migaki. Which essentially means to polish a column. In our case it means to do a little work, get to know the carpenters who'll be working on our house and then have lunch. First, they showed us how to strip off the bark that was left on the corners of the log and how far down to go. That was about it. There was not really any polishing involved, and we only spent about 20 minutes doing it.

Isn't it just lovely ('it' being the corner of the log, or lack of one)?
